Costco Announces White Privilege No Longer Accepted as Membership
Outraged Shoppers Decry The Policy Shift as “Straight-up Discrimination.”
Shoppers across the United States expressed shock and outrage this week after Costco announced that white privilege would no longer be accepted in place of membership at any of its warehouse stores.
“I’ve been shopping here for years,” said full-time suburban mom and part-time Karen, Sandy H., standing in disbelief outside a Costco in Des Moines. “Now they’re telling me I need an actual card? That’s discrimination.”
Costco executives explained the change was part of an ongoing company policy to “standardize access across all customer demographics.” “Historically, white customers have enjoyed automatic entry, unlimited samples, and a free gas discount just by existing,” said spokesperson Evan Shultz. “We’re simply bringing them in line with everyone else who pays $60 a year for their club privileges.”
The move has rattled white Americans nationwide, many of whom have been noticing the declining value of white privilege across multiple sectors. Delta Airlines clarified that being white does not guarantee free priority boarding, calling it “a market adjustment.” Disney theme parks similarly confirmed that FastPass access was purely for enforcing a class divide between “poors and normals.” And REI confirmed this week that white shoppers no longer automatically receive a lifetime membership just for knowing the word “Patagonia.”
“It’s just not what it used to be,” lamented 44-year-old Mark Reynolds, who was once able to stroll directly into a Costco food court and grab a $1.50 hot dog without question. “Now I’ve gotta swipe a card like some kind of minority. Honestly, it feels like straight-up oppression.”
The changes have even reached healthcare. “We used to get the good vaccines,” said one distressed man in the pharmacy line who then whispered, “You know… the ones that worked. Now we get the same shots everyone else does. That’s discrimination.”
Others admitted they’ve been eyeing more trendy demographics. “Sometimes I think about what it would be like to be a black lesbian,” said Jim Barnes of Scottsdale. “I hear Netflix just hands you a series deal. Meanwhile, when I go seventy in a school zone, I’m not let off with a warning anymore. Welcome to Jim Crow’s America.”
Experts say the purchasing power of white privilege has been in steady decline for years. In the 1990s, it could secure mortgage approvals, job offers, and lenient police encounters. Today, many complain that it barely covers HOA fees. “I thought the whole point of the HOA was to keep out the riff-raff,” said Marie Saunders, adding, “Making white people pay to live in a neighborhood like they’re some kind of brown is the definition of racism, right!?”
President Donald Trump, speaking at a rally, seemed to sum up the mood. “White privilege used to mean something, folks. It was beautiful. You got nice seats on the bus. Great tables at the diners, just because you were white. Now the Democrats want you to be like everybody else. It’s disgusting. It’s discrimination! And they don’t want me to say that out loud. Well, I just did. It’s discrimination.”
At press time, Costco confirmed that while white privilege would no longer be accepted for membership, its Kirkland Signature clothing line remained exclusively for caucasian men and women over forty.
